On Sunday, October 14, 2018, the Church celebrates the canonization of Oscar Romero and Pope Paul VI.
As archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Romero was an advocate for the poor and spoke out against poverty, social injustice, assassinations and torture. He was murdered while celebrating Mass in the chapel of the Hospital of Divine Providence. He has been declared a martyr of the Church.
Pope Paul VI was pope from 1963 -1978. He succeeded Pope John XXIII and completed the work of the Second Vatican Council. He implemented numerous reforms stemming from the work of the Council which affected every aspect of Church life. He fostered ecumenical outreach to the Protestant and Eastern Orthodox Churches while also reaching out to non Christians. Pope Paul is also well know for his encyclical, Humanae Vitae.
