In the face of destruction after Hurricane Harvey and now after Hurrican….. we are invited to find refuge on the holy mountain. This becomes our place of safety. There the Lord will provide a feast of rich food and wines. There he will destroy the veil that covers all peoples. There he will destroy death forever. He will wipe away every tear. On that day we will say, “Behold our God. He came to save us.” In the face of death and destruction clarity comes. There is nothing to distract us. We see clearly what matters. It took a Hurricane to get my attention. We have been through a life changing event and even though we have lost everything, we are thankful. Paul’s words are wonderful today. “I know how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me. My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches. To our God be glory forever.” Life changing events come to us and we are changed forever. We have different priorities. Things don’t matter as much. Thank God my family is safe. That is what matters. I don’t know what I would do if anything happened to them. I stood in front of raging winds and that is what I learned. Suddenly wanting a boat doesn’t matter so much. Why do I spend all my days working all the time? We don’t need another car. Others got it worse than us. Look at our neighbors. They have lost everything. I have dropped my baggage and the journey seems easier somehow. No, in front of the wind I realize that I am not God almighty. No, I am not the King of the Universe. Now I am contented to be me and mine. Now let us go to the mountain of God and find our protection in Him.
With love, Fr. Pat
